Zuma elected ANC president

Mired in controversy, former South African deputy president Jacob Zuma defeats Thabo Mbeki to become ANC president.
He faces possible charges of corruption, and was acquitted of rape last year. But now Jacob Zuma is the new president of the ruling African National Congress party in South Africa.
The former deputy president of the country was this evening announced as winner of a bitter contest to become head of the political body which brought about the end of apartheid.
His new position makes him virtually certain to become president of South Africa in two years' time.
