Will Sarah Palin run for president?

The former republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has announced she will resign as governor of Alaska.

The announcement has fuelled speculation that Mrs Palin, who is popular with the Republican party grassroots, might be preparing to make a bid for the White House in 2012.

But it has also led to confusion among US commentators as to why she has decided to step down 18 months before for the end of her term as governor.
