The economy is likely to take centre stage in the final televised debate tonight between America's presidential candidates.

There are just three weeks to go before the election, and the Republican John McCain needs a victory over his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, whose opinion poll lead is growing.

Senator McCain's position in the polls suggests his recent emphasis on negative campaigning may have backfired.

Pollsters have also uncovered disquiet about his vice-presidential running mate, Sarah Palin.
