Just when you thought the election campaign couldn't get more surreal, enter Paris Hilton, rebutting that campaign ad from John McCain which compared her to Barack Obama - the "biggest celebrity in the world".
Paris's mom has already dismissed the McCain ad pretty comprehensively, calling it a waste of money, a waste of time, and "completely frivolous". But it's her daughter who really delivers the killer blow, with a spoof campaign ad which is both smart and well made.
Clad in a leopard skin bikini and some pretty nifty heels, the celebutante declares that if she's being named and claimed by the Republicans, she must be in the running for the White House herself.
So "thanks for the endorsement, white-haired dude" she deadpans. "I want America to know that I'm, like, totally ready to lead". Barely glancing up from her glossy mag, she pitches a pretty comprehensive hybrid energy policy: prompting a rush of support across the blogosphere, with calls for a write in campaign - Hilton '08, here we come.
The McCain campaign's response: "Paris Hilton might not be as big a celebrity as Barack Obama, but she obviously has a better energy plan." Huh. Call that funny? That's, like, just so totally lame.
All this is almost as crazy as, say, the Washington Post discussing Hillary Clinton's cleavage. Or speculation about Barack Obama's weight loss tips in the Wall Street Journal. Except, didn't both those 'news' stories already appear? Perhaps Paris Hilton pitching herself for President isn't quite so surreal after all.
