Anti-government violence by Tibetan separatists spreads to another Chinese province.

One frightened witness said a crowd of Tibetan exiles had gone "crazy", hurling petrol bombs, and setting fire to a market, a police station and several police cars. The security forces responded with tear gas.

The Dalai Lama warned that the Tibet nation faced "serious danger" comparable with the 1959 uprising when he was forced into exile.

Tibetan separatists claimed the security forces killed 80 people; Beijing put the number at 10.
