Violence as Nato pledge more troops

President Obama is pleased with the outcome of the day's talks - a short-term pledge of more Nato troops in Afghanistan, but protests threaten to overshadow the event.

Once again, Britain seems likely to make the biggest commitment to Afghanistan in Europe, with the White House expecting an extra 900 British soldiers to be sent, although the government here is yet to confirm that.

The US also expects Spain to send 600 with another 600 to come from Germany.

The Italian defence minister has pledged to send another 520 soldiers. While Gordon Brown told a press conference this afternoon several others had pledged support.

But while there were burring issues inside, there were burning buildings outside as smoke from the offices and houses set on fire by protesters was clearly visible from the summit centre on the French-German border where leaders were meeting.

The violence of the protests caused a delay to the final press conference, as well as interrupting the leaders' wives plans.
