Venezuela's Chavez seeks re-election

Updated on 15 February 2009

By Jenny Wivell

Venezuelans are voting on reforms to allow President Hugo Chavez and other elected officials to seek as many terms in office as they wish. Jenny Wivell reports.

If the plans are approved, Chavez will be able to stay in power after his current term ends in 2012.

It is his second bid to extend his rule after a decade in office.

He says he needs at least another 10 years to secure the country's future and complete the socialist revolution; critics say the plans are undemocratic.
