American forces in Baghdad say they have killed one of al-Qaida's leaders in Iraq, thought to have been behind bombings there.

Troops surrounded a building in the northern Adhamiya area on Friday and shot dead the militant, known as Abu Rami.

This week the US handed Baghdad control over the city's 50,000 largely Sunni neighbourhood.

Guards, who took up arms against against al-Qaida militants, are now responsible for quelling much of the violence.

The US military also said this evening one of its helicopters had "gone down" in Baghdad.
