US General criticises policy in Iraq

Updated on 13 October 2007

By John Sparks

The man who once commanded US troops in Iraq has launched a verbal fusillade against the administration that sent him there.

Demolishing America's handling of the war, retired General Ricardo Sanchez warned that the United States was 'living a nightmare with no end in sight', and accused the US administration of not trying hard enough to devise an exit strategy.

General Sanchez was replaced as top commander in the aftermath of the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, although an Army investigation cleared him of any wrong doing.
