By Channel 4 News

Updated on 22 August 2007

14 US personnel are killed when a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashes in northern Iraq.

Four of the dead were crew members and the remaining 10 were passengers. The helicopter was engaged in a night operation.

A statement by the US military said that the helicopter had suffered mechanical failure and that there were no indications of hostile fire.

The crash is the worst since January 2005, when 31 service people were killed after a marine transport helicopter was downed.
