US silent on Iran guards claim

By PA News

Updated on 16 August 2007

Officials have refused to confirm reports that the US is preparing to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guards force as a terrorist unit.

It would be the first time official military units of a sovereign state were included alongside the likes of al Qaida, and militant groups Hezbollah and Hamas on the list of banned terrorist organisations.

The US has accused Iran of destabilising Iraq and Afghanistan, and claims the Revolutionary Guards supply and train insurgents. The classification would allow the US to target the force's finances.
