By Jonathan Miller

Updated on 08 November 2008

The head of the UN peacekeeping force in Congo defends the UN against accusations that it failed to prevent a massacre of civilians.

"We cant be everywhere all the time," said the head of the UN peacekeeping force in Congo.

On Thursday Channel 4 News revealed harrowing evidence of mass killings of civilians in the village of Kiwanja in the North Kivu province, a mile and half from a UN base.

A refugee camp housing up to 30.000 people was also completely cleared without any intervention by the peacekeepers.

The accompanying report contains distressing images.
