British embassy staff detained in Iran following the post-election violence will face a trial, a powerful Iranian cleric warned today, alleging they had "made confessions".

Iranian ambassadors across Europe have been summoned in protest against the move, while here, the foreign secretary, David Miliband, said he was seeking urgent clarification about Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati's statement.

Miliband said he remained "deeply concerned" about the two local staff members who were being held.
