Two-thirds parliamentary majority sought for Musharraf impeachment

Updated on 07 August 2008

By Jonathan Rugman

The leaders of Pakistan's ruling coalition parties begin impeachment proceedings against President Pervez Musharraf.

They will need a two-thirds majority in parliament to succeed.

The former general, who gave up control of the army last year, has not responded to the move, but has said previously that he would rather resign than be impeached.

Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif said they also wanted Musharraf to face votes of confidence in parliament and the provincial assemblies and promised to restore judges sacked under emergency rule.
