Tibet deadline passes: death toll disputed

Updated on 17 March 2008

By Lindsey Hilsum

The deadline for rioters in Tibet to surrender passed at midnight Chinese time, amid disputes over the number killed.

The government in Beijing says 13 "innocent citizens" were killed in riots last week in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, while Tibetan exile groups put the death toll as high as 100.

The government denies using lethal force against demonstrators, claiming the protests have now been quashed
