Tanks mass at Colombia's border

Updated on 05 March 2008

By Jonathan Rugman

Venezuela's military sends its armed forces to the Colombian border, inflaming a crisis which could become a war.

Heading for the Colombian border: Venezuela has begun mobilising its forces by air, land and sea.

Ten tank battalions are on their way to the frontier - fuelling fears that the crisis could spark a regional war.

Colombia raided neighbouring Ecuador to kill leftist guerrillas - a move condemned by most Latin American governments, and one which pushed Venezuela into action.

Ecuador's demanded an apology - but Columbia claims the rebels were trying to make a uranium 'dirty bomb'.
