Sudan's al-Bashir charged with genocide and crimes against humanity

Updated on 14 July 2008

By Jonathan Miller

Sudan's president is charged with genocide and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The court's prosecutor is seeking the arrest of Omar al-Bashir, who is also accused of war crimes in the Darfur region.

But the Sudanese government, which doesn't recognise the court, has warned that legal action would undermine the peace process in the Darfur region, where 300,000 people have died in the last five years.
