Sudan president to be indicted for genocide and crimes against humanity

Updated on 11 July 2008

By Jonathan Miller

Sudan's president becomes the first serving leader charged with genocide, but could seeking justice be the worst thing for his people?

Under indictment on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, the president of Sudan is to be issued with an arrest warrant on Monday by the International Criminal Court.

Luis Moreno-Ocampo said he would be submitting evidence to the judges on "crimes committed in Darfur over the last five years".

But the United Nations and the American state department are already said to be preparing to pull aid workers out of the region, fearing a violent backlash.
