The Sri Lankan government says it is halting air strikes and the use of heavy weapons against the Tamil Tiger rebels.

The Sri Lankan government says it is halting air strikes and the use of heavy weapons against the Tamil Tiger rebels.

The announcement follows mounting international concern over civilian deaths in the Tamil-held areas of the North east and calls for a complete ceasefire.

The UN's top humanitarian official, John Holmes, is in the country for meetings with Sri Lankan officials.

Our Asia correspondent Nick Paton Walsh has returned from Vavuniya to see the latest refugees who've fled the the government designated 'safe areas' in the North East.
