Snowmail: Writers' strike over

Updated on 09 February 2008

By Krishnan Guru-Murthy

A late rush of news has turned what was, frankly, a rather dull Saturday into a rather exciting one.

Several bits of news just breaking, including one that will please fans of everything from Ugly Betty to Jon Stewart's show over on More4. The screen writers' strike appears to have been resolved. A deal is expected to be ratified tonight in time for the Oscars, not to mention some smiles at the Baftas tomorrow night.

The military regime in Burma, or Myanmar as they like to be known, has announced a timetable for their roadmap to democracy. A referendum this year and a constitution leading to elections in 2010 will, claim the regime, mean a smooth transition from military to civilian administration. Dates are what the democracy leader Ang San Suu Kyi had demanded two weeks ago. We now wait to see what she makes of this latest offer. The regime of course does not have a good record on abiding by election results, and campaigners here are very sceptical. But whatever way you look at it, an admission that democracy is preferable to military dictatorship has got to mean some progress, hasn't it?

We are chasing the revelations in the Telegraph today that the bugging of prisoners in a British jail extended far beyond a conversation between a terror suspect and a Labour MP. It appears more run-of-the-mill suspects have been snooped on during more routine meetings with their lawyers. At least that's the allegation and we're looking into it.

Plus we'll have the sport of course, including Wales' victory over an uninspired Scotland in the first of today's Six Nations rugby matches, and everything else you need to know about this afternoon's fixtures.
