Snowmail: Mumbai terror day three

Updated on 28 November 2008

By Channel 4 News

More than 48 hours after the initial assault on key parts of Mumbai by some 20-25 assailants the picture is still very far from clear.

The Taj Hotel - which was declared yesterday to be down to one gunman - has today seen sporadic shooting and evidence of more than one, some say five or six gunmen.

The Indian security Forces are clearly having considerable difficulty in flushing them out.

The death toll stands at 143 according to some sources, with eight foreigners among them.

Were any Brits involved?

We're trying to harden up reports on several news agencies that seven of the gunmen may have been British. Other reports suggest they came from Leeds, but there is absolutely no official verification.

Krishnan is anchoring the programme tonight out of Mumbai and will have all the latest. He'll be on the ground with our diplomatic editor Lindsey Hilsum and our Asia correspondent Nick Paton Walsh.

MP arrested for asking awkward question

I shall be anchoring from London where there is a tremendous stink blowing up over the decision by the police to arrest a senior Conservative frontbencher over suspicions that he may have leaked Home Office documents to the media.

I came into work today to find a long message from Tony Benn, a stickler for parliamentary procedure, and he is convinced that there has been a major breach of process by the police and that it is unlikely that the decision did not go higher into the civil and political classes.

Suffice to say we're waiting for a response from a government minister to clarify the situation.

Cathy Newman is chasing all this down and we're talking live with Benn and others.

Damien Green MP, the Tory frontbencher at the centre of the storm spent nine hours with the police. And 24 hours on, the situation remains pretty live.

See you at Seven. Jon.
