Senate puts pressure on congress

Updated on 01 October 2008

By Sarah Smith

Barack Obama and John McCain break off election campaigning to be in Washington for the US Senate vote, reports Sarah Smith.

The senate is to vote on the bailout bill which it is hoped could save the global economy from collapse.

After key changes and frantic backroom deals, there are hopes that a bipartisan consensus will emerge.

Senate leaders hope the candidates' support can help sway reluctant congressmen, who also face election in just over four weeks' time.

But many voters are not convinced.
