Under the ancien regime it would have been unthinkable: the president of France given a standing ovation on Capitol Hill.

But on his first official trip to Washington, Nicolas Sarkozy has charmed both the White House and Congress, promising a new era of friendship between the two countries.

Relations famously plunged to a historic low in the run-up to the Iraq war. But President Sarkozy has said goodbye to all that, pledging to support America on Iran, Afghanistan and the war on terror.
