By Jonathan Rugman

Updated on 26 March 2008

At the start of his state visit, French President Sarkozy calls for improved relations between Britain and France.

He said he wanted the famous entente cordiale to become a far more friendly "entente amicale".

Accompanied by his new wife, the model turned singer Carla Bruni, he arrived at Heathrow in the last hour. He was greeted by Prince Charles.

During his two-day visit he will be the Queen's guest at Windsor Castle and will address both houses of parliament.

M Sarkozy is also due to hold talks with Gordon Brown on issues ranging from Afghanistan to nuclear power.
