The footage of Saddam's execution is unlikely to shock many Iraqis who survived his regime. His dictatorship was based on brutality at home and slaughter abroad.

Some of the images which follow are deeply disturbing, many others simply cannot be broadcast.

But they demonstrate why, three years ago, some Iraqis met western soldiers by screaming "You cannot imagine what we've been living through."

Alex Thomson looks back at the life of Saddam Hussein.
