Russia is facing diplomatic isolation over its military action in neighbouring Georgia.

A group of Russia's Asian allies, led by China, has failed to back her decision to recognise the separatist regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

With the French foreign minister warning of EU sanctions, the G7 has also condemned Moscow's continued occupation of Georgia.

But the Russian foreign minister responded to the threat of possible EU sanctions from France today as "the product of a sick mind".

The Russian prime minister, Vladimir Putin has said the US encouraged Tbilisi to use force in South Ossetia to benefit the presidential campaign in the US.
