Dark days for Russian democracy as thousands mourn the campaigning journalist Anna Politkovskaya.

In a visit to Germany President Putin told Chancellor Angela Merkel, that the killing of Anna Politkovskaya was a crime that would be punished.

But no members of his government were visible at the funeral of the 48-year-old, who was a harsh critic of the regime.
