Russia recognises South Ossetia freedom, sparks 'new Cold War' fears

The US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, led the international outcry, calling the move "regrettable".
Meanwhile, Britain's foreign secretary, David Miliband, will head to Ukraine to build what he called "the widest possible coalition against Russia's aggression".
"We're not seeking it but we're not afraid of a new Cold War," Russia has declared after its decision to recognise the independence of Georgia's two breakaway regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
