The United Nations says that the fighting in Pakistan has displaced nearly 1.5 million people, many of whom are now living in hastily built refugee camps.
Despite three weeks of heavy fighting Pakistani troops are still engaged in military operations in the Swat Valley and neighbouring provinces.
Up to 15,000 soldiers are fighting Taliban militants north of the capital Islamabad.
There is heavy fighting in Swat and the army says it is advancing towards the Taliban stronghold of Mingora, Swat's main city.
Fierce street battles have also taking place in Buna, but today the army says it has won back the main Taliban stronghold there.
But fighting continues and glimpses of the devastation can now be seen as residents begin to trickle back home.
