Polls open in Mugabe one-horse race

By James Blake

Updated on 27 June 2008

The polls open in Zimbabwe's presidential run-off, with Robert Mugabe defying international condemnation to press ahead with the vote.

This despite the withdrawal of the opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and a turnout said to be low with only one candidate standing.

There are few independent observers of the election which follows weeks of brutal violence against the president's critics. Reports suggest his supporters are intimidating people into casting their vote.
