Prime Minister Gordon Brown calls for an immediate truce but stops short of urging an Israeli withdrawal.

The British back the imminent EU Middle East drive to end the hostilities, as huge protests and anger across the world continue.

Gordon Brown called on Israel's Arab neighbours to join an international effort to create the conditions for a mutual standdown.

But the mass protestors against Israel, in cities across the globe, demanded an end to the incursion into Gaza.
