Updated on 18 May 2008

President Hu Jintao promises China will do everything it can to find missing quake victims. Keme Nzerem reports.

Miraculously, people are still being pulled from the rubble seven days on.

The government today announced three days of national mourning for earthquake victims, during which the Olympic torch relay will be suspended.

The official death toll has risen again, to 32,000, but the authorities expect this to reach at least 50,000.

The epicentre was in Sichuan province, where more than 100,000 people are still believed to be trapped.

The accompanying report begins in Donghekou, a village completely destroyed when a mountain collapsed and buried it under rubble and earth.
