Pitfalls of supplying Basra

Updated on 14 December 2007

By Nick Paton Walsh

Channel 4 News sees the British Army's attempts to distribute supplies near Basra descend into chaos.

It is the last area still under British control - and the handover was never likely to be smooth.

As British forces prepare to transfer responsibility for Basra's security to the Iraqis, attempts to distribute supplies to local marsh Arabs have degenerated into scenes of chaos.

British troops in Basra are now based at the airport, to the south of the city. Channel 4 News joined their patrol into the area inhabited by the marsh Arabs.
