Osama bin Laden's driver found guilty at Guantanamo war crimes trial

By Sarah Smith

Updated on 06 August 2008

In the first full war crimes trial at Guantanamo Bay, Osama bin Laden's former driver is found guilty of supporting terrorism.

Salim Hamdan faces a maximum life sentence after the jury made up of US military officers returned its verdict.

It was the first verdict from the much-criticised military tribunals set up by the Bush administration to try terrorism suspects held in Cuba.

Hamdan and the other 265 Guantanamo captives are classed as enemy combatants so they do not qualify for a trial in an ordinary court.
