On Gaza's bombed streets

By Jonathan Rugman

Updated on 02 January 2009

Channel 4 News obtains footage from inside Gaza, otherwise sealed off, as a building comes under attack.

Our on the ground account of life under Israeli bombardment in Gaza comes as there is no ceasefire in sight and Israel maintains its aerial assault on Gaza for a seventh day.

Hamas has vowed revenge, for the death of a senior leader yesterday, and has called for a "day of wrath" against Israel, while the Israeli military is poised for a possible ground assault.

The United States insisted today it was working towards a "durable and sustainable ceasefire".

Bombs continued to land in southern Israel today but it was Gaza again which suffered most in the face of more than 30 Israeli air strikes.

Three children, brothers between the ages of eight and twelve, were among the five Palestinians who died today.

The children were killed in a raid near Khan Yunis that may have been targeting a rocket launcher near their home.

In total 430 people are now believed dead in a week of raids.

Other Israeli bombing raids today have hit al-Qara, north of Khan Yunis and Gaza city and Jabaliya in the north.

This report from our diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Rugman contains some distressing images.
