Omagh verdict

By Andy Davies, Alex Thomson

Updated on 20 December 2007

Sean Hoey, accused in relation to the Omagh bombing of 1998, was today found not guilty on 29 counts of murder.

After 11 months of consideration the judge hearing the case threw out all 56 charges against Hoey for lack of evidence.

The Omagh bombing was the worst single atrocity of the troubles, but almost a decade later no one in Northern Ireland has been convicted of responsibility for the carnage of that summer's day almost a decade ago.

Transcripts of the trial have been passed to the police ombudsman and the judge today said there had been a 'deliberate and calculated deception by police' in an attempt to beef up statements.

Outside the court today there were renewed calls for a cross-border public inquiry, not only from the relatives of the dead but the mother of the acquitted man, Sean Hoey.
