Obama wakes to 'the mother of all crises'

By Channel 4 News

Updated on 21 January 2009

The new president has suspended all Guantanamo war crimes trials, with a draft order to shut the camp within a year, Sarah Smith reports.

Barack Obama has also summoned his economic team to meet with the former Federal Reserve chief, Paul Volcker, who has said it will take "several trillion dollars" to set the US economy right.

Volcker has issued a stark warning for President Obama: America is in the midst of "the mother of all financial crises".

Obama's busy day began, though, with a more reflective moment: a special prayer service in Washington cathedral.
