Obama, McCain put aside differences to mark anniversary of 9/11 attacks

By Sarah Smith

Updated on 11 September 2008

Presidential hopefuls are in New York tonight to mark seventh anniversary of the Twin Towers attack.

They will join the relatives of victims who died when hijacked planes were flown into the Twin Towers seven years ago at Ground Zero later today.

Meanwhile in Afghanistan another American soldier has also been killed, making this the worst year for the US casualties since the invasion of the country in 2001.

It came on the day a top American commander, Admiral Mike Mullen, warned that the US wasn't winning the conflict against the Taliban.

The invasion was triggered by the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
