Obama lays out Afghanistan vision
Updated on 27 March 2009
US President Obama declared today that there can be no peace without reconciliation between former enemies, as he set out his new war strategy for Afghanistan.
Obama promised to reach out to more moderate elements within Afghanistan and Pakistan, with help from other countries in the region, like Iran, China and Russia.
And there was an appeal to America's allies, like Britain, to show their commitment.
Obama called the situation was growing "increasingly perilous", highlighted by today's suicide bomb blast in the crowded mosque in the northwestern town of Jamrud on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border which left 37 people dead.
