Russia and US agree nuclear reduction

US President Barack Obama and Russia's President Dmitri Medvedev agree a preliminary deal to reduce their countries' nuclear weapons stockpiles.

Holding a summit in Moscow after the strained relations of the Bush years, the two leaders pledged to scrap some of their nuclear warheads within seven years of a new arms reduction agreement coming into force.

Russia also agreed to allow US troops and weapons to cross its territory on the way to Afghanistan.

However, the two leaders are still at odds over US plans for a missile shield in Europe.
