No breakthrough for longer truce

The French and Egyptian presidents trumpet a plan for peace, but Israel and Hamas show little sign of wanting a ceasefire in Gaza.
Israel says it agrees with "the principles" of the ceasefire proposal outlined by Egypt, while Hamas has hinted at "positive signs", if nothing concrete.
The plan would mean a limited ceasefire to allow aid into Gaza and efforts to prevent Hamas from rearming itself.
At the United Nations in New York world leaders discussed action to end Israel's attack on Gaza for good, with Britain talking of "the first glimmerings" of a ceasefire.
But it is still far too early to talk of a breakthrough, and there is no agreement yet at the UN on the best chance of success.
