By James Blake

Updated on 27 August 2008

Hillary Clinton says to her supporters planning to not vote for Obama: "We are on the same team, and none of us can sit on the sidelines".

She also described her former rival as "my candidate".

Senator Obama, currently running neck-and-neck in the polls with McCain described Hillary Clinton's call for unity as "outstanding".

Addressing thousands at the party convention in Denver, Senator Clinton said America could not afford four more years of the same failed Bush policies.

She said this despite being a personal friend of the Republican candidate, Senator John McCain.
