Mugabe defiant: vote to go ahead

By Jonathan Miller

Updated on 24 June 2008

Robert Mugabe declares that elections will go ahead despite pressure from around the world to call off Friday's vote.

As opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai takes refuge inside the Dutch embassy in Harare, the United Nations security council has unanimously condemned the violence meted out against his supporters.

South Africa's ruling ANC party has also accused the Zimbabwean regime of "riding roughshod" over democracy, making a fair election impossible.
