Mosque attack kills at least 48

By Julian Rush

Updated on 27 March 2009

A suicide bomber kills dozens of worshippers in an attack on a mosque in northwest Pakistan. This comes as America announces its new strategy on the troubled country and its neighbour, Afghanistan.

A suicide bomber blew himself up in the crowded mosque during Friday prayers.

Officials have confirmed the deaths of 48 people, but say the number is likely to rise. Another 70 have been taken to hospital.

The attack came as US President Obama prepared to announce the dispatch of 4,000 more US troops to neighbouring Afghanistan as part of his new strategy, viewing Pakistan and Afghanistan as "two countries, one problem".
