Updated on 02 July 2008

By Jonathan Rugman

Foreign Secretary David Miliband has been speaking to Channel 4 News about the need for a "reinvention" of the EU.

Meanwhile the French take over the presidency of the EU this week and a damaging row has broken out between the British EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson and President Nicolas Sarkozy over subsidies to French farmers.

The French president has also lashed out at his Polish counterpart for saying there is no point continuing to ratify the Lisbon Treaty.
