Relentless bad news from Iraq means that the Republicans are in real danger of losing control of the US Congress for the first time in 12 years.

In next month's mid-term congressional elections, the Democrats need a net gain of 15 seats to win the House of Representatives and six to take control of the Senate. And most polls predict they are in with a chance.

What is more, with so many races too close to call, the fight is getting dirty, with a spate of bitter personal attacks against candidates.
