McCain vs Obama: the presidential debate

Updated on 27 September 2008

By Sarah Smith, Jon Snow

The Wall Street crisis dominated the the first televised presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain.

The presidential nominees clashed over the economy, asthe US Congress and Senate were locked in highly charged debate over President Bush's plan to spend billions of tax payers' dollars to reboot Wall Street.

The electorate appears to be enraged by a measure seen as designed to save not them but the Wall street crew that brought about the disaster.

Senator Obama said it was "the final verdict on 8 years of failed economic policies of George W Bush", while John McCain sought to portray his opponent as naive and inexperienced.
