The Republican candidate for the White House arrives in the UK today as part of a whistle-stop tour of the Middle East and Europe.

John McCain will hope his talks with Gordon Brown at Downing Street and then Conservative leader David Cameron will appear statesmanlike to voters back home.

While for party leaders here, it was an opportunity to sound out the possible next president on issues such as Iraq, the threat from al-Qaida and climate change.

But attention at their meetings didn't just focus on what was said.
