McCain accuses Obama of sexism in what has been dubbed the lipstick wars

By Sarah Smith

Updated on 10 September 2008

As the US elections reach fever pitch, the McCain campaign launches a frenzied attack on Barack Obama for what they claim was a sexist remark, reports Sarah Smith.

It's already been dubbed the lipstick war; at a rally yesterday Barack Obama said a pig in lipstick was still a pig.

The McCain camp said that was an insult to Governor Palin who famously described herself as a pit-bull in lipstick.

Obama has hit back, pointing out that John McCain used the same phrase to attack Hillary Clinton and calling the attack phoney.

But with the polls tightening and Palin energising Republicans, he's looking increasingly defensive.
