This weekend Kosovo gets its independence from Serbia, something that was not Nato's official aim.

In a different world, before 9/11, before Iraq, Kosovo was the high point of liberal interventionism, the use of force for apparently good ends; in this case, to avert an alleged humanitarian disaster.

Nine years on, the troops are still there and ethnically Kosovo is little more at one with itself than it was a decade ago.
